RESEARCH INTERNSHIP  - SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY

New: Spring- Fall 2008

Looking for a motivated undergraduate student interested in paleontology/paleoecology or marine ecology to assist a PhD student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in her dissertation research.

This study investigates how communities changed in response to environmental change in the Caribbean over the past 5 million years.

Specifically, the study is focused on

1) Determining the possible causes of the known extinction occurring around 3.5 million years ago

2) Identify the changes in functional groups (niches or guilds) in  response to environmental changes

3) Identify taxonomic changes in communities through time

Help is needed in generating quantitative data for the above research.

The student will be primarily responsible for counting and weighing samples and sorting samples of bivalves and gastropods.  The student will learn about the different roles that major groups play in benthic communities.  The student may also be trained in the taxonomic identification of a major molluscan class.  The student will be encouraged to use the data generated to complete their own research project on a number of interesting questions.
